Deputy Defense Minister Denies Israeli Nuclear Testing

(IsraelWire-6/18) Responding to a query of MK Abd el-Wahab Darawshe, Deputy Minister of Defense Silvan Shalom stated that Israel did not conduct a test of nuclear weaponry in Eilat on May 28th as alleged.

Darawshe based his accusations on a report released by an Egyptian expert, who alleged the earthquake caused in the area on May 28th was the result of the Israeli nuclear testing in the Eilat Gulf on that day.

According to Labor Party MK Rafi Elul however, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported that on May 28th, a nuclear test did take place as reported. The deputy minister instructed MK Elul to submit his request in writing and it will receive the appropriate response. Later in the day however, Shalom did issue a statement calling Elul's report erroneous and baseless.

Shalom added that Israel has never conducted nuclear testing.
