On Monday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who arrived in Lithuania on an official visit.
During the meeting, the two leaders discussed cooperation between Lithuania and Israel in the political, economic, security, and defense fields. The Lithuanian President noted that Israel's experience in the defense industry is invaluable, and that innovation—especially in biotechnology and life sciences—could become an important bridge for cooperation between the two countries.
The Head of State emphasized the importance of the Lithuania-Israel Business Forum, during which key bilateral agreements will be signed. According to Gitanas Nausėda, this will enable deeper economic ties and promote joint research and technological development.
Referring to the situation in the Middle East, the President reaffirmed Lithuania's unequivocal position on the terrorist attack carried out by Hamas against Israel two years ago and stressed that Lithuania supports Israel's right to defend itself in accordance with international law.
At the same time, the Lithuanian leader called on Israel to take urgent steps to address the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip—ensuring the adequate delivery of humanitarian aid and the protection of civilians. The President reiterated that adherence to humanitarian law is a non-negotiable value.
"Famine cannot be used as a tool in political or military conflict. We call on Israel to ensure respect for human rights in the Gaza Strip, and we condemn the violence in the West Bank and the illegal expansion of settlements," the President emphasized.
The President also reiterated Lithuania's support for a two-state solution, in line with international law, as a path to lasting peace and stability in the region.
Speaking about Russia's war against Ukraine, the President thanked the Israeli leader for attention to Ukraine and called on Israel to take a more active role in supporting the country under aggression, by increasing pressure on Russia at the international level.
The meeting also addressed the topic of Jewish cultural heritage in Lithuania. President Gitanas Nausėda highlighted that Vilnius, which was a vibrant center of Jewish spiritual and religious life for centuries, continues to honor this legacy. The Lithuanian leader noted that President Herzog would have the opportunity to visit Šeduva, the town where his great-grandfather originated.
"Lithuania will continue its efforts to preserve Jewish heritage, which is an inseparable part of our cultural and historical identity. We will not forget those who perished in the Holocaust, nor the Righteous Among the Nations who saved Jews. Their names will live on in our shared history," said the President.
President Gitanas Nausėda emphasized that Lithuania stands ready to work with Israel to build a secure and responsible future—founded on cooperation and respect for historical memory.
