SPECIAL COMMISSION ATTAINS FURTHER PROGRESS IN DESTROYING IRAQ'S
                         CHEMICAL WEAPONS CAPABILITIES
The following has been received from the Special Commission set up under
Security Council resolution 687 (1991) in connection with the disposal of
Iraq's weapons of mass destruction:
The Chemical Destruction Group of the United Nations Special Commission
for Iraq has reported that it has completed its destruction of bulk stocks of
Iraq's chemical warfare agents and precursor chemicals. This was achieved
with the destruction of stocks of the remaining three precursors (white
phosphorous, toluene and hydrogen fluoride) and small quantities of
155-millimetre mustard-filled shells recovered during further checks of the
Muthanna site.
The Group is now concentrating its efforts on the destruction of chemical
weapons production equipment which has been collected at the Muthanna site for
that purpose. Thereafter, the Commission will send a team of experts to Iraq
to conduct a thorough survey of the site, using sensors, in order to ensure
that all the relevant items have been destroyed and that no threat of chemical
hazard remains at the site. Once that has been accomplished, a further team,
led by the Chairman of the Commission's Chemical Weapons Destruction Advisory
Panel, will conduct a final inspection and formally hand the site back to the
Iraqi authorities.
