SPECIAL COMMISSION'S CHEMICAL DESTRUCTION GROUP COMPLETES
DESTRUCTION OF IRAQ'S MUSTARD-AGENT MUNITIONS
The following was received from the Special Commission set up under
Security Council resolution 687 (1991) in connection with the disposal of
Iraq's weapons of mass destruction:
The Special Commission's Chemical Destruction Group has completed the
large-scale destruction of Iraq's stock of 155mm mustard-agent-filled
artillery shells. On 12 December, the Group destroyed 453 of these munitions,
bringing to a total of 12,674 the number destroyed at the Muthanna site since
the Group's inception in June 1992.
A few of these artillery rounds are left at Muthanna but are in such a
poor condition that they cannot be destroyed in the usual manner of venting
and draining. Once a suitable alternative method for their destruction has
been found, destruction of these remaining rounds will proceed.
This brings the totals for destruction at Muthanna to 28,332 munitions;
326,609 litres of chemical warfare agent; and 1,470,745 litres of precursor
chemicals. Chemical destruction activities will now focus on the destruction
of the remaining agent (essentially tabun and mustard) and precursor chemicals.
It is envisaged that destruction and cleaning up activities will be
completed by mid-1994, thereby permitting the withdrawal of the Chemical
Destruction Group.
