SPECIAL COMMISSION INVESTIGATING ALLEGATIONS OF CHEMICAL WEAPONS USE BY IRAQ
The following was issued today by the Special Commission set up under
Security Council resolution 687 (1991) in connection with the disposal of
Iraq's weapons of mass destruction:
The Special Commission is concluding the first stage of its investigation
into the allegations of chemical weapons use in southern Iraq. As the second
stage, an inspection team will be sent to Iraq to conduct a thorough inspection
of the area of the alleged attack.
The principal objective of the first stage, a fact-finding mission, was
to obtain a precise location of where the alleged attack took place to enable
the UNSCOM team to inspect the correct location. Without an exact location, no
useful inspection could be conducted. Precise coordinates are now available
to the Commission.
Until the inspection has been concluded and the results analysed, there
will be no comment on the results of the inspection nor on the Commission's
conclusions on the question of chemical weapons use.
