UNSCOM Press Release on Iraq (UN Information Service)
IK/154 24 September 1993 SPECIAL COMMISSION ON IRAQI DISARMAMENT SAYS IRAQ HAS AGREED TO ACTIVATION OF MONITORING CAMERAS AT TWO TEST SITES The following was received from the Special Commission set up under Security Council resolution 687 (1991) in connection with the disposal of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction: On 23 September, the Special Commission was informed by Iraq that it would no longer prevent the activation of the monitoring cameras installed by the Commission at two rocket test stands in Iraq. The Commission has instructed the inspection team currently in Iraq monitoring these sites to proceed with the activation and operation of these cameras. Activation of these cameras had been a precondition set by the Commission for the continuation of the talks with Iraq, which had been initiated at a high technical level in New York on 31 August. These talks will now resume in Baghdad. To prepare for the talks, an advance team of the Commission will go to Baghdad on Monday, 27 September. It will be charged with receiving from the Iraqi side the information promised by Iraq during the New York round of talks. This will be followed by a visit by the Executive Chairman of the Special Commission, who will arrive in Baghdad on 1 October. The aim of this visit will be to resolve all outstanding issues, in particular, the initiation of ongoing monitoring and verification activities under the plans approved by the Security Council. A small team from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is also expected to visit Iraq to continue the discussion on nuclear issues. That team will arrive in Baghdad on 30 September. * *** * .
