TEXT: UNSC PRESIDENT STATEMENT ON RESOLUTIONS CONCERNING IRAQ
(Council preparing to proceed with comprehensive review) (250) New York -- The President of the United Nations Security Council reported to the press October 30 on the Council's discussions of resolutions concerning Iraq's obligations. Following is the text of remarks by the UNSC President: (Begin text) REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE SECURITY COUNCIL TO THE PRESS Can I, at the completion of informal consultations this morning, just give you a brief report that it was really devoted to one subject, which was Iraq. And on that we were discussing the text of a draft letter which I proposed I should send as presidency of the Council to the Secretary-General, giving the Council's views by consensus of how they would be approaching a comprehensive review of the resolutions concerning Iraq's obligations. In respect of the matters in those resolutions, we've had a very constructive discussion this morning and I'm glad to say that we have virtually reached the point of agreement on every word of the text of the letter. There is just some checking going on with capitals but I very much hope within the next few hours I shall have a final formal letter to send to the Secretary-General, which will make it clear that the Council, once the terms of resolution 1194 are fulfilled, are in a position to proceed with a comprehensive review on an agreed basis. Thank you. 30 October 1998 (end text)
