SUBJECT: RII-1589, Abu Ghurayb Vaccine Plant (CENTAF RFI-918)
[ (b)(2) ] recently reassessed the status and location
of the Abu Ghurayb Vaccine Plant. The facility that has [ (b)(2) ]
is no longer considered by [ (b)(2) ] to be a BW facility.
Abu Ghurayb has been frequently reported as the location
of a clostridium vaccine plant, built with European assistance.
The Iraqis have converted the facility to produce the biological
agent botulinum toxin.
The newly identified plant is the Abu Ghurayb Suspect BW
Facility, [ (b)(2) ] at 331823N 0441136E. This plant has been
confirmed as the actual location of the clostridium vaccine plant.
The facility is located 6KM NW of the center of Saddam
International AfId and just off the Jordan Highway which runs
West from Baghdad to Fallujah. The facility is on the Northern see
of the Jordan Highway and is enclosed by a wall which forms a
square compound. The main entrance to the facility is centrally
located along the northern wall. The facility houses fermentors
which can be used to make BW agents. The facility contains a
globe-shaped water tower, possible animal pens in the northwest
corner, storage areas, and numerous other buildings.
