RESPOND TO TASK 3243
PASS TO THE ITF OPS OFFICER
6 JAN 1605 SENT BY [ (b)(6) ]
SUBJECT: Iraqi Chemical Storage Areas, RII-1421
[ b.2. ]
1. Information was requested on chemical storage areas at
the following coordinates:
A. Site 1: 3329N 04340E. [ (b)(2) ] holds a
possible storage site close to these coordinates at the Falluja
Ammo Depot South (331245N/0434125E). Two probable refrigerated
bunkers have been identified here. There are a total of 17 bunkers
with similar construction and probable refrigeration equipment
located at nine sites throughout Iraq. Since two of these bunkers
were initially identified at the Salman Pak BW Production
Facility,
they have been associated with the possible storage of biological
agents or weapons. The refrigeration would make them ideal for the
storage of perishable biological weapons. Refrigeration may also
extend the shelf life of Iraq's unstable unitary chemical fills,
but there is no evidence that these bunkers have in fact been used
for chemical munitions storage. This type of bunker could also
be used to store electronic equipment, fuel-air explosives, and/or
smart weapons. The Habbaniyah Possible Chemical Warfare Production
Facility I is located at 333250N 0433755E, 4.2 NM from the "Site
1" coordinates. The Habbaniyah Possible Chemical Warfare
Production Facility II is located at 332841N 0434014E, 4 NM from
the "Site 1" coordinates. The Habbaniyah facilities are assessed
to produce
precursor chemicals for the Iraqi chemical weapons program.
B. Site 2: 3350N 04348E. [ (b)(2) ] holds the
Samarra CW Research, Production, and Storage Facility at 335020N
0435030E. This facility has eight cruciform bunkers used for the
storage of chemical weapons produced at the Samarra facility. It
is assessed that the newly produced weapons are held here prior to
their transport to airfields with special bunkers and other select
munitions depots located throughout Iraq.
C. Site 3: 3304N 04435E. [ (b)(2) ] holds the
Salman Pak CBW Research, Production, and Storage Facility at
330415N 0443530E. This facility, assessed to be Iraq's prime
facility for the production of biological weapons, has two of the
probable refrigerated bunkers that are mentioned in connection
with "Site 1."
D. Site 4: 3030N 04747E. These coordinates
are given in referenced INTSUM #147 as the Headquarters for the
III Corps. [ (b)(2) ] holds no chemical weapons storage at these
coordinates. The closest sites to these coordinates that
[ (b)(2) ] holds as being possibly related to CW storage are: the
Ash Shuaybah Ammo Storage Depot NE at 302840N 0473830E has one [
    (b)(1) sec 1.3(a)(4) ] chemical warfare ("S"-shaped)
storage bunker and one probable refrigerated bunker; the Ar
Rumaylah Republican Guard Ammo storage Facility 1 at 302931N
0472903E and the Ar Rumaylah Republican Guard Ammo Storage
Facility II at 303105N 0472803E do not have [ (b)(1) sec
1.3(a)(4) ] storage bunkers, but increased security measures
and the construction of "V"-shaped decontamination stations have
been noted since mid-December. A multiple rocket launcher
battalion is deployed adjacent to facility II. Multiple rocket
launchers were one CW delivery means used by the Republican Guards
in the Iran-Iraq War.
2. These four sites are only a sampling of the
possible chemical warfare storage locations in Iraq. There are a
total of 22 [ (b)(1) sec 1.3(a)(4) ] Chemical Warfare
("S"-shaped) bunkers at ammo storage facilities and airfields.
Samarra has eight cruciform bunkers. In addition, 17 probable
refrigerated bunkers have been identified.
