IRAQ-KUWAIT: SITUATION REPORT
MILITARY DEVELOPMENTS
IRAQI SCUD ATTACK AGAINST SAUDI ARABIA
PRELIMINARY REPORTS INDICATE BAGHDAD FIRED TWO OR THREE
MODIFIED-SCUD MISSILES FROM SOUTHERN IRAQ TOWARD DHAHRAN IN
EASTERN SAUDI ARABIA LATE SUNDAY EVENING LOCAL TIME. ONE MISSILE
MAY HAVE IMPACTED NEAR DHAHRAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. ONE SCUD
MAY HAVE BEEN INTERCEPTED BY A PATRIOT SURFACE-TO-AIR MISSILE.
COMMENT: PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS INDICATES THE MISSILES WERE
LAUNCHED FROM THE VICINITY OF DUWA--ABOUT MIDWAY BETWEEN AL
AMARAH (FROM WHICH IRAQ TEST-FIRED THREE AL HUSAYN MISSILES ON
DECEMBER) AND SAFWAN (WHERE BAGHDAD FIRED A PROBABLE AL ABBAS
MISSILE ON DECEMBER).
DAMAGE TO CHEMICAL WEAPONS FACILITY
AT
SAMARRA PRODUCTION BUILDINGS
MAY HAVE BEEN DAMAGED.
PRESS REPORTING THAT IRAQ
FIRED SEVERAL FROG ROCKETS INTO NORTHEASTERN SAUDI ARABIA LATE ON
SATURDAY. THE ATTACK CAUSED NO CASUALTIES OR DAMAGE.
COMMENT: BAGHDAD HAS ABOUT 18 FROG LAUNCHERS AND AN UNKNOWN
NUMBER OF ROCKETS IN KUWAIT. THIS 70-KILOMETER-RANGE UNGUIDED
ROCKET POSES A MINIMAL THREAT TO COALITION FORCES IN SAUDI
ARABIA.
