THE EXTENT OF IRAQI EFFORTS TO
DEVELOP NUCLEAR WEAPON. SINCE THE
EARLY 1980'S IRAQ HAS BEEN ENGAGED IN LARGE-SCALE SECRET
EFFORTS TO INDIGENOUSLY PRODUCE HIGHLY ENRICHED URANIUM THROUGH
ELECTROMAGNETIC SEPARATION.
IN ADDITION TO ATTEMPTING TO
BUILD HIGH-SPEED CENTRIFUGES TO ENRICH URANIUM TO
WEAPONS-GRADE, IRAQ ALSO HAS DEVELOPED AN ELECTROMAGNETIC
ISOTOPE SEPARATION CAPABILITY,
SEVEN FACILITIES PLUS A PC-3
HEADQUARTERS WERE ACTIVE IN THE NUCLEAR WEAPONS EFFORT. THE
SEVEN FACILITIES WERE: TUWAITHA, TARMIYA, AL-ATHEER,
AL-RABBIYAH, AL-DIJJLA, AL-JAZIRAH, AND AL-FAJAR. THE PROGRAM

FOUR OF THESE FACILITIES, AL-JAZIRAH,
AL-RABBIYAH, AL-DIJJLA, AND AL-ATHEER, ESCAPED ANY SIGNIFICANT
DAMAGE FROM COALITION AIRSTRIKES DURING THE GULF WAR. THE
OTHER FACILITIES, TUWAITHA, TARMIYA, AND AL-FAJAR, SUFFERED
EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. IN THE CASE OF AL-FAJAR, THE IRAQIS HAD NOT
YET INSTALLED THE SEPARATION EQUIPMENT AT THE TIME OF THE GULF
WAR. AL ATHEER WAS THE SITE WHERE ACTUAL BOMB CONSTRUCTION WAS
TO TAKE PLACE. ALL ACTIVITY
ASSOCIATED WITH THE IRAQI NUCLEAR WEAPONS PROGRAM HAS BEEN
BROUGHT TO A STANDSTILL BY THE GULF WAR.
BELIEVES THAT, SHOULD ACTIVITY RESUME, THE
