Iran FM stresses on importance of Iraq's stability, calm, national unity

Tehran (ISNA) - Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, in a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein, exchanged viewpoints on the latest situation of bilateral ties, regional and international developments.

During the meeting, the Iranian foreign minister expressed satisfaction about the bilateral ties in different areas of cooperation and underlined the necessity of existing agreements to be implemented.

He described upgrading trade and economic ties and move toward tapping into the great existing potentials in the cooperation between the two countries as key priorities.

Amir-Abdollahian also said facilitating trade exchanges in border crossings, uninterrupted transport and finalization of Basra-Shalamcheh railway - and its effective role in increasing tourism and the volume of exchanges - will help both sides reach a higher level of cooperation and getting close to using all existing potentials in line with mutual interests.

Also during the meeting, Amir-Abdollahian thanked the Iraqi government and nation for hosting Iranian pilgrims well during Imam Hossin's Arbaeen, and described as significant the work done in both countries to prepare the ground for holding the major event properly.

The Iranian foreign minister also said it is important that Iraq's stability, calm and national unity are protected and its legal institutions are respected, and reiterated the Islamic Republic of Iran's stance that existing issues in Iraq's internal scene are resolved within the framework of legal processes, while maintaining the power of the government of Iraq.

Fuad Hussein, for his part, described relations between the two countries as significant and thanked the Islamic Republic of Iran for its responsible stance regarding Iraq's internal developments.

He talked about the Iraqi government's measures on Arbaeen pilgrimage and briefed Amirabdollahian on the ongoing efforts to establish calm and internal stability in Iraq.

The Iraqi foreign minister said the security of Iran and Iraq is intertwined and underlined that his country will allow no threats against the Islamic Republic of Iran from the Iraqi soil.

Other topics discussed during the meeting were cooperation in the field of security, especially preventing actions by hostile, separatist and terrorist groups in Iraq and the Kurdistan region and some border areas, appreciation of Iraq's role as a facilitator for resumption of major Hajj for Iranian pilgrims this year, the agreement between the two countries on establishment of new consulate generals in both countries (in the cities of Mosul and Isfahan), briefing on the latest situation of talks for the removal of sanctions, consular affairs related to Arbaeen pilgrims of other neighboring countries, the condition of one of the Iranian Hajj pilgrims arrested in Saudi Arabia, the major regional developments and expansion of ties between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Persian Gulf countries.
