Iran reiterates need to preserve Iraq's territorial integrity

Sulaymaniyah, Oct 6, IRNA -- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Friday underlined the necessity to maintain Iraq's national unity and territorial integrity.
Speaking on the sidelines of a funeral ceremony held for former Iraqi president Jalal Talabani, the Iranian minister said that Iran has always been a Friend of the Iraqi nation, including the country's Kurd people.
'Iran will not take Iraqi Kurds responsible for the strategic mistakes made by certain people,' Zarif said, in an implicit reference to a referendum held in Iraqi Kurdistan Region on September 25 urged by certain Kurd officials.
Zarif expressed hope that all people in Kurdistan region will return to the path of 'Mam [uncle] Jalal' (Jalal Talabani) who he described as the 'symbol of Iraq's unity and territorial integrity.'
Zarif also referred to the late Talabani as 'a friend of Iran and a tireless fighter against the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein,' stressing that Talabani had made relentless efforts for keeping Iraq's unity and territorial integrity.
