MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The anti-terrorist unit of the Iraqi army liberated from the Islamic State (ISIL or Daesh) militants Mosul's eastern Assamah quarter, media reported on Tuesday.
"The anti-terrorist unit completely liberated the Assamah quarter," Al Iraqiya TV channel reported.
Earlier in the day, the Iraqi Armed Forces liberated the Gogjali quarter and the state TV building located in the area.
The operation to retake Mosul from the Daesh, a jihadist group outlawed in Russia and a number of other states, has been ongoing since October 17. More than 30,000 Iraqi and 4,000 Kurdish fighters are taking part in the offensive, backed by about 5,000 US troops and supported by US-led coalition airstrikes. Mosul has been occupied by the Daesh since 2014.
