Deputy FM condoles with Iraqi gov't on demise of Ahmad Chalabi

Tehran, Nov 3, IRNA -- Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian ion Tuesday condoled the Iraqi government and nation on the demise of Renowned Iraqi politician and parliamentarian Ahmad Chalabi.

In his message, Amir-Abdollahian said that with his deep understanding of the evil plots of the enemies, Chalabi did his best to serve Iraqi independence and national solidarity.

Amir-Abdollahian hailed Chalabi's role in Iraq's political and economic development and prayed to God for his departed soul to rest in peace.

The veteran Iraqi politician, who frequented the country's political scene in senior posts in the 2000s, died of a heart attack in the capital, Baghdad at 70.

Haitham al-Jabouri, the secretary of the Iraqi Parliament's financial panel, said that Chalabi was found dead in bed at his Baghdad home on Tuesday.

Chalabi was a vocal opponent of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

Chalabi spent decades in the US and the United Kingdom in exile.

He returned to his country after Saddam's downfall, which came about with the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Chalabi served as the interim oil minister and deputy prime minister in 2005 and 2006.
