The Iraqi parliament has approved Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's nominees for the vacant cabinet posts, including two critical security positions.

On Saturday, the Iraqi lawmakers confirmed Abadi's latest picks, Mohammed Salem al-Ghabban and Khaled al-Obaidi for respectively interior minister and defense minister.

Ghabban is affiliated with the Badr parliamentary bloc and Obaidi is a member of a Sunni Arab bloc in the parliament.

The post of Iraq's finance minister was given to former foreign minister, Hoshyar Zebari, who previously served as deputy prime minister.

The Iraqi parliament also approved ministers for tourism and women's affairs.

On September 8, the Iraqi parliament officially named Abadi as the country's new prime minister and approved most of his proposed ministers.

The Iraqi parliament delayed the vote for weeks as the country has been facing a growing militancy by the Takfiri ISIL group and its allied militants, who have taken over areas in the country's west and north.

Iraq has been fighting the ISIL terrorists since they took control of the city of Mosul on June 10. The takeover was followed by the fall of the city of Tikrit, located about 140 kilometers (87 miles) northwest of the capital, Baghdad. The control of Tikrit was later retaken by the Iraqi army.

The ISIL terrorists have been committing heinous crimes in the captured areas, including mass execution of civilians and Iraqi security forces.
