Iran's stance on Iraq crisis strengthened Tehran-Baghdad ties: FM official

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Sept 7, IRNA -- Director of the Foreign Ministrys Persian Gulf Department Mohammad Farazmand said Sunday that Irans adequate stance about the Iraqi crisis further strengthened relations between the two nations.

He made the remarks at a seminar to review the developments in Iraq and its influence on Iran and the entire region.

Farazmand said that Iranian foreign policy advocates a world free from violence and extremism, calls for interaction with the outside world and believes in win-win diplomacy.

Farazmand said that terrorism is the main challenge to the international peace and security and criticized the Western governments hesitation to efficiently counter the threat of the self-proclaimed Islamic State.

He said that the Western governments stood idle until the Islamic State terrorists staged an offensive on Kurdistan region.

Today the Sunni Muslims in Iraq want political and security support from Iran more than Shia Muslims do, Farazmand said.

He said that Iran was the first country that went to help the Kurds after they came under attack by the Islamic State.
