Peaceful transition of power in Iraq

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Aug 17, IRNA -- Although the dark clouds of sectarianism had eclipsed Iraq's political system and the country was to descend into anarchy, Nuri al-Maliki made a historic decision. The Iraqi premier bowed to the constitution and accepted the peaceful transition of power in the Arab nation.

He had earlier called on police and security forces not to interfere in the country's politics, the Persian daily Iran wrote Saturday.

Maliki represents a generation of Shia politicians who agreed to step aside from power to preserve national interests, it added.

Shia leaders have always sacrificed their factional interests in favor of national unity and consolidation, it said, adding that Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani also made efforts to fortify the sapling of democracy in the Persian Gulf state. His religious decrees have always helped forestall turmoil at the nick of time.

Ayatollah Mohammad Baqir al-Hakim, who was assassinated in a bomb attack in Najaf in 2003, did his utmost to foil the plots of detractors by respecting the votes of majority.

Nowadays, power struggles overshadow Arab nations, but the peaceful transition of power in Iraq has raised hopes that Shias, Sunnis and Kurds will be able to join hands and fight off terrorists, the paper concluded.
