UNITED NATIONS, August 10 (RIA Novosti) - While on Iraq a draft UN Security Council resolution remains pending, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon issued a statement expressing deep concern about the evolving humanitarian and security situation in Iraq.

Ban said that "the United Nations and the international community are also closely watching political developments in the country."

Thousands of civilians remain trapped on Mount Sinjar after having fled the advance of the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), or Islamic State (IS).

The UN said Ban "calls upon all Iraqi political parties to abide by the constitutional timeline that governs the nomination of the Prime Minister. He also calls for reason and wisdom to prevail and urges all leaders in Iraq to form a broad-based government that is acceptable to all components of Iraqi society. Such a government should be able to mobilize the nation to confront the threat from the Islamic State in a way that will bring security and stability to the whole country."

The Islamic State is a Sunni group that has been fighting in Syria and launched an offensive in Iraq in June. The group has taken over large parts of the country, with the goal of seizing Baghdad. Also in June, the group announced the establishment of a caliphate on the Iraq-Syria border.
