The UN special envoy to Iraq has warned that the Arab country could plunge into chaos if the Iraqi parliament fails to move forward on forming a new government.
Nickolay Mladenov called on all Iraqi lawmakers to attend the upcoming session set for Sunday and join in efforts to choose a president, prime minister and speaker.
Lack of progress on choosing the top three government posts 'will only serve the interests of those who seek to divide the people of Iraq and destroy their chances for peace and prosperity,' he said in a statement on Saturday.
Iraqi lawmakers are yet to form a new government as they failed in their first session of parliament on July 1 to make any progress.
The first assembly session ended after Kurdish lawmakers boycotted the session over their conflicts with other lawmakers, leading to the adjournment of the assembly.
The members of parliament are tasked with naming a new government. After choosing the parliament speaker, the lawmaker will have to pick the Iraqi president as well as the prime minister within 45 days.
The three individuals selected from among Sunni, Shia and Kurdish candidates are expected to form a unity government.
This comes as the Iraqi forces are pressing ahead with their fight against ISIL Takfiri militants, who have taken control of large swathes of the country and threatened to take the battle to the capital, Baghdad.
