Iraqi army backed by thousands of Christian volunteers has pushed back Takfiri terrorists of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) from a strategic area in Salahuddin Province.

Iraqi security officials say army troops retook the village of Awja in Salahuddin Province on Monday, adding that the village, which is situated south of Tikrit, is entirely under the army's control.

Meanwhile, Iraqi helicopters have hit the ISIL positions and hideouts in areas surrounding northern city of Tikrit.

The Iraqi army and tribal fighters have also retaken full control of Tikrit from the ISIL terrorists.

Elsewhere in Aqlawi district of Anbar Province, some 140 Takfiri militants were killed in an ongoing massive military operation.

Earlier on Sunday, Iraqi armed forces managed to liberate the town of Deli Abbas in Diyala Province.

The latest operations come days after thousands of Iraqis fled their homes after militants from the ISIL attacked Christian areas and minority communities in northern Iraq.

Over the past days, Iraqi armed forces have been engaged in fierce clashes with the terrorists, who have threatened to take their acts of violence to other Iraqi cities, including the capital, Baghdad. However, the ISIL's advance has been slowed down as Iraqi military and volunteer forces have begun engaging them on several fronts.

Senior Muslim clerics have condemned the ISIL atrocities, including mass executions and rape.

Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has recently said Baghdad's air and ground forces will turn the tide against the ISIL and its associated militant groups within days. Al-Maliki has vowed that the country's security forces would confront the foreign-sponsored militants.
