Gunmen Attack Sunni Mosque In Baghdad
August 31, 2013
Gunmen have stormed a Sunni mosque in Baghdad, killing five worshippers.
The attack on August 31 was the latest in a surge of violence that has sparked fears of a return to the sectarian fighting between Iraq's minority Sunni and majority Shi'ite Muslims that left thousands of dead in 2006 and 2007.
Security officials said the attackers entered the mosque in the predominantly Shi'ite neighborhood of Baghdad Jadidah during early morning prayers and shot at worshippers.
The gunmen reportedly used weapons fitted with silencers.
Two other worshippers were wounded.
The gunmen fled after the attack. No one immediately claimed responsibility.
More than 3,800 people have been killed in violence in Iraq so far this year.
