More Deadly Attacks Hit Baghdad Area

May 28, 2013

At least seven people have been reported killed in fresh attacks in Iraq, a day after a wave of violence left scores dead.

At least five people were killed on May 28 when a car bomb exploded in Baghdad's mainly Shi'ite Sadr City neighborhood.

Two people were killed in a bomb attack northeast of the capital. On May 27, at least 75 people were killed in a wave of bombings that hit mainly Shi'ite areas of Baghdad.

There has been a surge in attacks across Iraq since the beginning of the year, deepening fears of a renewal of sectarian violence that killed thousands in 2006-2007.

The violence comes as tensions between the Shi'ite-led government and the Sunni Muslim minority are at their worst since U.S. troops left Iraq in December 2011.
