At Least 33 Killed In Iraq Bombings

May 27, 2013

A wave of deadly bombings has hit predominantly Shi'ite neighborhoods of Baghdad, the latest attacks in a monthlong surge of violence across Iraq.

At least 33 people were reported killed and dozens wounded in the May 27 blasts, which tore through busy markets and streets across the capital.

No one has claimed responsibility, but Sunni Muslim Islamist insurgents and Al-Qaeda-linked militants often target Shi'ite districts.

Bombings in Shi'ite, as well as Sunni areas, of Iraq in recent weeks have deepened concerns about a renewal of the sectarian violence that killed thousands in 2006-07.

The violence comes as tensions between the Shi'ite-led government and the Sunni Muslim minority are at their worst since U.S. troops left Iraq in December 2011.
