A group of unknown gunmen have attacked a line of stores in eastern Baghdad in the Zayouna neighborhood, killing at least 12 people and injuring 3 others.

The attack took place on Tuesday shortly after sunset when the stores were at the peak of their business.

"Gunmen in four SUV vehicles stopped near the stores and gunmen equipped with silenced weapons started shooting at everybody near the stores," Furat Ahmed, a policeman at the scene, said.

Police reported that the targeted stores had been previously attacked by bombers last year.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. The casualties have been confirmed by Hospital officials.

On Sunday, at least three people were killed and nearly 20 others wounded in a bomb explosion outside the home of an Iraqi army intelligence officer in northwest of the capital, Baghdad.

On Friday, three worshippers were killed and seven others wounded in a bomb attack close to a mosque in the city of Mahaweel, 55 kilometers (35 miles) south of Baghdad.

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) said on May 2 that April had been the deadliest month in Iraq since 2008 as terrorist acts have killed over 700 people and injured more than 1, 600 others across the country.

The mission also said Baghdad was the worst affected governorate with a total of 211 killed and 486 injured.
