Deadly Bomb Blasts Hit Southern Iraqi Shi'ite Cities

April 29, 2013

Three car bombs have struck two Shi'ite cities in southern Iraq, causing dozens of casualties.

Police and medical officials said at least nine people were killed and some 20 wounded when two car bombs exploded in the city of Amara.

Another car bomb killed at least seven people and wounded 15 in Diywaniya.

Hours later, a car bomb went off in Karbala, killing at least two people and wounding 12 others.

No one has claimed responsibility.

More than 200 people have been killed in a wave of violence across Iraq over the past week that followed clashes between security forces and Sunni protesters in the north.

Iraq's Sunni Arabs have been protesting since December against what they see as discrimination against their minority community by the Shi'ite-led government.

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has blamed the conflict in Syria for the "wind of sectarianism" coming to Iraq.
