At least four people have been killed and 18 others wounded in four bomb attacks across Iraq ahead of the country’s upcoming provincial elections.
Officials said Wednesday that a car bomb went off near an army checkpoint at the Abu Ghraib neighborhood, located west of the capital, Baghdad, killing three people and injuring six others.
According to medical and official sources, another person was killed and six others hurt after a car bomb exploded in southern Baghdad.
Meanwhile, a roadside bomb hit a convoy carrying a member of Iraq’s parliament in the town of Madain, located south of Baghdad, injuring four people. However, the politician was not hurt, the sources said.
According to the sources, a magnetic “sticky bomb” on a civilian car also hurt two people in the district of Mansur, west Baghdad.
Violence has increased in Iraq in recent weeks as the country is preparing to hold provincial elections on April 20, the first in the country since 2010.
On April 16, similar bomb attacks claimed nine lives and wounded 27 in central Iraq.
Also on April 14, at least 10 people, including a provincial elections candidate and seven policemen, lost their lives in a spate of deadly attacks across the country.
Iraq's provincial elections are due to be held in 12 of the country's 18 provinces and soldiers and policemen cast their ballots for the elections on Saturday, a week ahead of the main vote.
More than 8,000 candidates have registered to compete for the 378 seats up for grab and an estimated 16.2 million Iraqis are eligible to vote.
