Second Day Of Deadly Violence Across Iraq

April 15, 2013

Iraqi officials say at least 23 people have been killed and dozens more wounded in a second day of increased violence across the country.

Police say a series of deadly bombings took place on April 15 in Baghdad, the western city of Fallujah, the northern city of Kirkuk, and several towns south of the capital.

At least 200 people have been injured.

The violence comes a day after a string of attacks killed at least 10 people in Iraq, including a Sunni candidate in upcoming elections.

His death brings to 14 the number of candidates killed so far.

No group has claimed responsibility for the violence, but Sunni militants linked to Al-Qaeda frequently stage attacks aimed at weakening the Shi’ite-led government.

In the April 20 elections, Iraqis are to choose provincial governing councils.

More than 8,000 candidates are running for nearly 450 seats.

Authorities have delayed voting in two Sunni-dominated provinces amid security concerns.
