Suicide Bomber Kills Iraqi Sunni Lawmaker
January 15, 2013
A Sunni member of the Iraqi parliament has been killed by a suicide bomber in the country's western province of Anbar.
Provincial Governor Qassim al-Fahdawi said Ifan al-Issawi was killed along with several bodyguards and civilians in the city of Fallujah.
The French news agency AFP quoted a policeman as saying the suicide bomber wrapped his arms around Issawi before detonating his explosives.
Issawi was a member of the Sunni-backed Al-Iraqiyah bloc that is part of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's national unity government.
The attack comes amid growing political tensions as Sunni protesters have demonstrated for the last three weeks in Anbar Province against Maliki's Shi'ite-majority government.
Anbar is dominated by Iraq's Sunni minority.
