Blair faces second questioning on Iraq war on January 21

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

London, Jan 12, IRNA – Former prime minister Tony Blair is to reappear to face questioning for the second time about the Iraq war on January 21, the official inquiry announced Wednesday.

The inquiry also revealed the result of a ballot to allocate 40 of the 60 seats in the hearing room, due to the public demand, with the remaining places reserved for families of the 179 British soldiers killed in Iraq.

Stop the War Coalition (STWC) has already announced that it is again organising protests, street theatre and media briefings along with Rose Gentle and others who lost family members.

Hundreds of protesters assembled outside Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in central London when the former prime minister first gave evidence in January last year, calling for him to be prosecuted as a war criminal.

Blair is being recalled to face further questioning among a dozen officials and military leaders. The only other senior politician asked to appear in front of the five-member panel ifor a second time is former foreign secretary Jack Straw.

The official inquiry into the war opened at the end of July in 2009 and had hoped to complete its report by the end of last year, but in December, it announced it was asking for “further details” in a third series of hearings, which begins next week.
