Iran, ready to participate in Iraq's reconstruction: VP

Tehran, Oct 18, IRNA -- First Vice-President Mohammad-Reza Rahimi here on Monday voiced Tehran’s readiness to participate in Iraqi reconstruction projects.

The VP made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, who arrived in Tehran this morning on a daylong visit.

Underlining the need for expansion of regional cooperation, Rahimi said such a move would help regional states turn into big powers which would bring about security, tranquility and welfare to all regional nations.

Referring to the existing potentials in both Iraq and Iran, he underlined the need for further expansion of all-out ties between the two neighboring states.

Voicing Tehran’s readiness to boost economic, trade, oil and gas cooperation with Baghdad, he stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran attaches great importance to development and security of the neighboring Iraq.

Rahimi expressed hope that establishment of the new Iraqi government would pave the way for further expansion of all-out cooperation between the two nations.

He further called for consolidation of unity and solidarity among all Muslim nations across the globe.

For his part, Maliki referred to Tehran-Baghdad relations as close and strategic and called for continued consultations between the two sides.

He further appreciated Tehran’s stands regarding establishment of security and national solidarity in his country.

The Iraqi PM stressed that the reconstruction process in Iraq is in need of cooperation of all neighboring states, underscoring the importance of Iran’s participation in Iraq’s reconstruction projects.
