Deadly Protest in Iraq

VOA News 19 June 2010

Iraqi security officials opened fire on demonstrators protesting electricity shortages Saturday, killing one person and wounding at least two.

The incident took place in the southern city of Basra, where thousands of people had gathered outside the provincial council building demanding the resignation of the electricity minister.

Authorities say some demonstrators hurled stones at the building.

The incident comes a day after at least 20 people were killed in a wave of violence across Iraq.

Authorities say the violence included a car bombing north of Baghdad that killed at least eight people and a shooting near the Syrian border that killed seven Iraqi soldiers.

Some officials fear insurgents may be taking advantage of the political deadlock that followed Iraq's March elections to derail recent security gains.

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
