Germany hails Iraqi voters' courage for defying election violence
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Berlin, March 8, IRNA -- German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle praised Iraqis for going to the polls on Sunday to vote for a new parliament amid election-day violence.
"I have great respect for the courage of many (Iraqi) women and men for committing themselves to democracy by participating in the elections," Westerwelle was quoted as saying in a statement released by the foreign ministry in Berlin.
"At the same time, I condemn the attacks which have cast a cloud over election day," he added.
A series of deadly attacks rocked Iraq as millions of voters went to the polls for an election seen as a key test of the country's stability ahead of a pullout by American troops next year.
At least 38 people were killed and dozens more injured in a wave of devastating bomb and rocket attacks on polling stations across Baghdad alone.
