U.S. Signs Over Control of Compound to Iraq

HABBANIYAH, Iraq – U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Edwin Bayba signed over the Coalition Compound, at the Habbaniyah Training Center, to the Iraqi government on Oct. 5.

Accepting on behalf of the Office of the Prime Minister was Samir Al-Haddad of the Secretariat of the Committee for Receiving Real Properties and Camps. The handover is the first by Multi-National Security Transition Command – Iraq in support of the U.S. military drawdown.

The Coalition compound was home to U.S. advisors part of the Iraq Training Advisory Mission- Army who advised the Iraqi Location Command and the Training Center staff at the Habbaniyah Training Center. Those advisors will continue their advising duties with the Iraqi army, but will now be commuting from Camp Taqaddum. The 25 villas, 8 water tanks, 3 generators, and a water purification unit are available for immediate use by the Iraqi Location Command at Habbaniyah.

At the completion of the signing ceremony, U.S. and Iraqi guests gathered for a feast to commemorate the handover. The return of the compound is a visible reminder that the U.S. forces are returning properties to the Iraqi government, in fulfillment of the security agreement and as Iraqi security forces become more capable to perform their missions with reduced U.S. mentorship.
