Training Center Celebrates Third 81mm Mortar Course
CAMP UR, Iraq -- The Tallil Training Center here graduated its third 81mm Mortar Training course Sept. 28, training 68 students from the 10th and 14th Iraqi army Divisions.
The 81mm Mortar Training course has three major areas of training emphasis: Forward Observers, Fire Direction Center personnel, and the Mechanical/Gun Line crew. Training in this course consisted of map reading, fire direction center activities, forward observer duties and responsibilities, safety checks, ammunition types and Serbian 81mm mortar characteristics and capabilities.
The course was designed to teach theory and allow the students to practice this theory throughout the course with hands on exercises. The course culminated with a student live-fire exercise shooting high explosive and smoke rounds. In addition, the course currently has thirteen instructors; all of whom are graduates of the 81mm mortar certification course. The final three days of the course focused on practical range tables, range procedures, employment of the mortar section, crew drills, range reconnaissance and live-fire exercise preparation.
Upon the completion of training and the graduation, the Training Center Weapons Wing Commander, Iraqi Maj. Mohammed said he was very receptive to recommendations made by the recent graduates and welcomed new techniques to improve this program. One course graduate said that overall the course was a success and should improve with each new training cycle. These soldiers will now return to their units and continue their efforts towards ensuring the Iraqi Army is capable of defending the Iraqi people against foreign and domestic threats.
