WASHINGTON, Oct. 7, 2009 – President Barack Obama yesterday met with Iraq’s president and praised him for his work toward promoting national unity in Iraq, a White House news release said.

Obama dropped in on Iraqi President Jalal Talabani’s meeting with National Security Advisor James L. Jones at the White House to express his support for the Iraqi leader, the release said.

“The president conveyed his appreciation for the leadership that President Talabani has shown in promoting national unity in Iraq and encouraged him to continue his efforts in this regard,” the release said.

The president conveyed support for Iraqi efforts to adopt election laws soon, the release said, and also reaffirmed that the United States remains committed to working with Iraq to promote security, political progress and economic development as Iraqis take responsibility for their future.

The leaders expressed support for future economic cooperation, the release said, and talked of the upcoming U.S.-Iraq Business and Investment Conference scheduled for Oct. 20 and 21 in Washington.

Obama called Talabani on Oct. 5 with a similar message, the release said.
