Iraqi authorities say a bomb blast in Baghdad's Sadr City has killed at least 55 people and wounded more than 100.
The blast tore through a market Wednesday in the mostly Shi'ite district. Officials say the attacker hid the bomb under a load of vegetables loaded on a motorcycle rickshaw.
Earlier, a spokesman for the U.S. Defense Department, Geoff Morrell, said a rise in violence is expected as U.S. combat forces prepare to withdraw from Iraqi cities next week.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has also warned that insurgents were likely to intensify their strikes.
On Monday, a series of attacks in Iraq left at least 26 people dead, including three students killed in a roadside bomb blast in Sadr City.
Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
