Iraq Releases Detained American Contractor

By VOA News
11 June 2009

U.S. Embassy officials in Baghdad say the Iraqi government has released one of five American contractors detained during an investigation into the murder of another American.

U.S. authorities said Thursday Iraq freed one man on bail due to insufficient evidence. But Iraqi Judge Abdul-Satter Bayrkdar says three of the five Americans have been released. He says the other two remain in jail for further interrogations about a different crime.

Iraqi authorities detained the five Americans following the slaying of James Kitterman last month. The 60-year-old construction company owner was found dead in his car on May 22 in Baghdad's protected Green Zone. Officials said attackers bound Kitterman, blindfolded him and stabbed him to death.

In other news, Iraqi security forces say have arrested a suspected terrorist in Mosul for allegedly placing roadside bombs and facilitating attacks against Iraqi troops. A coalition force spokesman said the suspect's arrest on June 9 shows that Mosul's SWAT forces are "willing and able to bring dangerous terrorists to justice."
