Car Bombings Kill 41 in Iraqi Capital

By VOA News
29 April 2009

Iraqi officials said car bombings killed at least 41 people in eastern Baghdad's Sadr City district Wednesday.

An interior ministry official said about 70 others were wounded when at least two bombs exploded in marketplaces in quick succession.

The bombings are the latest in a recent upsurge in violence. More than 150 people were killed last week in attacks on predominantly Shi'ite targets, raising fears of a renewed wave of sectarian strife.

In separate violence Wednesday, the U.S. military in Iraq said an attacker threw a grenade at a U.S. and Iraqi patrol near the northern city of Kirkuk. The U.S. military said members of the U.S. patrol returned fire, killing two people and wounding another. The U.S. said the dead were enemy fighters, but Iraqi officials said they were civilians.

U.S. military officials said the attack occurred as the patrol was handing out grant money to stimulate small business in the town of Riyadh.
