Turkey Sponsoring Training Missions For Iraqi Forces
April 07, 2009
BAGHDAD -- Iraq's defense minister says Turkey is sponsoring training missions for Iraqi military officers, RFE/RL's Radio Free Iraq (RFI) reports.
Abdul-Qadir Muhammad Jassim al-Ubaydi says Turkey's close geographical and historical ties with Iraq and its many Arabic-speaking translators are an advantage for training Iraqi troops.
He added that the two countries are discussing a plan to bring Turkish military experts into Iraq to train land, naval, and air forces.
Parliament member Fyriad Rawandouzi told RFI that military training collaboration between Ankara and Baghdad works very well partly because the United States also played a role in training Turkey's Army.
