Iran, Iraq urge expansion of relations

Baghdad, March 29, IRNA -- Iran’s Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani and Iraqi President Jalal Tlabani in a meeting held late on Saturday called for expansion of Tehran-Baghdad ties.
The two also urged fostering of bilateral cooperation in parliamentary issues as well as exchange of parliamentarians between the two nations.
The Iranian and Iraqi officials held talks on regional cooperation between the two countries in watering, agricultural and environmental fields towards desert reclamation.
The Iranian speaker arrived in Najaf, Iraq, on March 24 to pay a non-official visit to that country.
During his stay in Iraq, he made pilgrimage to Iraq's holy cities of Karbala and Najaf and met with Iraq’s prominent cleric Ayatollah Ali Sistani.
Also on Friday, Larijani conferred with Iraq’s Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki on the issues of bilateral ties as well.
