Larijani: Iraq's security pact has harmful impacts

Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani said on Tuesday that the US is now experiencing a very tough time in Iraq and the pressure brought upon by the country on Iraq to sign the security pact will have harmful impacts for the entire region.
Larijani made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Indian National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan in Tehran on Tuesday.
According to the Press Bureau and Media Department of the Majlis, at the meeting Larijani criticized US approach in the region.
At the meeting, the Indian envoy felicitated Larijani on assuming his new post as Iran's Majlis speaker and described Larijani as an impressive person in Iran's political scene.
India is regarded as a friend which has deep rooted cultural and historical commonalties with Iran, Larijani said.
Given the good ties between the two countries, he expressed satisfaction with friendly and broad political, economic and cultural relations between Iran and India.
Cooperation between Tehran and New Delhi in reconstruction of Afghanistan has brought tranquility and stability to the region, he said, calling for continued cooperation between the two sides.
Referring to regional development, Larijani said the current situation in Iraq and Afghanistan is very sensitive. He added that restoration of stability and tranquility would be to the benefit of the people in that region.
The Indian official, for his part, described Iran as a very important country in the region and said expansion of friendly relations and cooperation between the two sides is of prime importance.
Construction of Iran, Pakistan and India pipelines would help forge friendship between the three countries, he said.
Restoration of tranquility in Afghanistan is in line with the interests of the people in the region, he pointed out.
Referring to Iran's significant role and cooperation in restoration of peace and tranquility in Afghanistan, he called for exchange of experiences between Iran and India to this end.
Interference of outside forces in Afghanistan would jeopardize the interest of the entire region, he underlined.
At the meeting, Larijani extended an invitation to his Indian counterpart to pay an official visit to Iran.
