Iran supports establishment of peace in Iraq: envoy

Iranian Ambassador to United Nations Mohammad Khazaei on Tuesday announced Iran's support for the efforts of the Iraqi government and nation aimed at establishment of stability and development in that war-torn state.
He made the remarks while addressing a meeting on implementation process of a comprehensive project to reconstruct Iraq, held at the UN headquarters.
Briefing the audience on Iran's stands regarding Iraq, the Iranian envoy said investment on reconstruction, security and stability of Iraq would benefit the entire region.
He praised the Iraqi government and people for their efforts to strengthen rule of law and establishment of peace and security in that country, and said that settlement of the problems is in need of national unity and solidarity of the Iraqi people and the assistance of the international community, particularly the neighboring states.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has supported and will support the efforts of the Iraqi government to establish peace and security there, Khazaei added.
Condemning terrorist acts in Iraq, he said Iran has been a victim of Iraqi terrorism in the past few years, referring to attack on several members of Iranian embassy in Baghdad.
Citing several UN reports on critical situation in Iraq, he said Iran attaches great importance to security in its neighboring country, Iraq.
As to measures taken by the Iranian government to consolidate ties with Baghdad, the envoy said the visit to Iraq of the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was an indication to the will of the Iranian leaders to boost friendly ties with Baghdad.
He said that Iran supports political process in Iraq and the Iraqi reconstruction.
Khazaei condemned baseless claims on Iran's interference in the Iraqi domestic affairs.
