Separate Bombings in Iraq Kill Over 50, Scores Wounded

By VOA News
15 April 2008

Iraqi authorities say two separate bomb blasts killed more than 50 people and wounded 94 others Tuesday, in Sunni Arab areas of Iraq, which had been peaceful as of late.

The first attack occurred in Baquba, when an explosives-laden car parked in front of a restaurant exploded around lunchtime outside provincial government headquarters. Women and children were among the 40 victims. Eighty others were wounded.

Iraqi police say they expect the death toll to rise.

At least 13 other people died in a second attack west of Baghdad, in Ramadi, and 14 people were wounded. There are conflicting reports on whether that attack involved a car bomb or a suicide bomber.

No group has claimed responsibility for Tuesday's violence.

Elsewhere, in Mosul, twin car bombs exploded in quick succession as U.S. soldiers and Iraqi police were in the area. Police say at least 12 people were wounded.

On Monday, attacks in other parts of Iraq killed at least 22 people.

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
