Iran concerned over Iraq's situation: Rafsanjani

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, April 7, IRNA
Chairman of the Expediency Council, Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, on Sunday evening voiced Tehran's grave concern over Iraq's situation.

At least 20 civilians were killed in Sadr City and houses levelled into rubble when the US forces bombarded the city indiscriminately on Sunday in an operation they said to control neighborhoods used by militias to fire rockets and mortars into the nearby green Zone.

In a meeting with former Iraqi prime minister, Ibrahim Jafari, he called for unity and solidarity of Iraqi people and urged removal of all kinds of differences and discord in the neighboring Iraq.

Iraq's Constitution can be an appropriate source for regulating relationship among different political, religious and ethnic groups, Rafsanjani said.

He said the occupying forces are the root cause of all discord created among Shia Muslims in the war-torn country.

The EC chairman urged Iraqi officials to make greater efforts to prevent such phenomena among different Iraqi groups and parties.

Rafsanjani stressed the need for establishment of security and tranquility throughout Iraq.

For his part, Jafari praised Iran's key role in settlement of his country's problems in the past several years.

Iran is interested in settlement of peace, stability, and tranquility in Iraq, he said adding that the Islamic Republic has been very much effective in solving the Iraqis' problems.

He called for an end to all conflicts in his country through peaceful means and implementation of law.
