Hosseini affirms Iran's peace efforts in Iraq

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, April 7, IRNA
Foreign Ministry spokesman, Mohammad-Ali Hosseini, said here on Monday that Iraqi stability and security is Iran's first priority and Tehran plays its role in that regard.

He told reporters during his first press conference in the new Iranian year (started March 20) that Iran will do everything to help Iraqi peace and stability.

Referring to a recent visit to Iran of an Iraqi delegation, he said, "We urged the Iraqis to exercise self-restraint." He added that Iran has done all within its power to end conflict in Iraq.

"An Iraqi delegation travelled to Iran and talks were held. We called on all the parties involved in the conflict to exercise self-restraint," Hosseini said in reference to Iranian mediation between Iraqi government and al-Mahdi Movement, followers of Iraqi religious leader Moqtada al-Sadr.

Al-Mahdi Movement is a mainstream Iraqi political party with 30 MPs at Iraq Parliament.

The Movement had withdrawn its MPs from the parliament in protest at the government policy, but, they returned to their seats after an agreement with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
