Iraqi Sources Say Kurdish Party Official Killed in Mosul Attack

10 October 2007

Iraqi officials say a minibus carrying a bomb targeted the offices of a key Kurdish political party near the northern city of Mosul, killing a party official.

At least five other people were wounded in Wednesday's attack, which targeted the offices of the Democratic Party of Kurdistan.

Also Wednesday, a car bomb exploded in the central Iraqi city of Tikrit, killing at least four people, including at least one policeman.

Iraqi officials have condemned the deadly shooting of two women in Baghdad by foreign security guards on Tuesday. Guards employed by an Australian-owned company fired on the women's car as it approached their convoy in Baghdad's Karrada district.

Iraqi police and witnesses say the guards raced away after the shooting, which killed a woman driver and a female passenger, and wounded two others in the vehicle.

The security firm, Unity Resources Group, said it deeply regrets the incident. It said the guards fired on the speeding car after it ignored several warnings to stop, including hand signals and a flare.

U.S. diplomats in Baghdad say the security firm was hired to protect an American non-profit organization promoting good governance in Iraq. The organization is under contract to a U.S. government agency (USAID).

An Iraqi government report has accused guards working for American firm Blackwater USA of deliberately killing 17 people in Baghdad on September 16. Blackwater says its guards responded lawfully to an attack on a U.S. diplomatic convoy.
