Joint Statement by Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker and General David H. Petraeus on U.S. Embassy and Multi-National Force-Iraq Cooperation for Reviewing U.S. Government Protective Security Detail Operations in Iraq
The full Iraqi-U.S. Joint Commission on U.S. Government Protective Security Detail (PSD) operations in Iraq is preparing for its first meeting in Baghdad.
The Commission Co-Chairs have already met.
The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and the Multi-National Force-Iraq (MNF-I) affirm their mutual solidarity and cooperation in these important discussions.
MNF-I will occupy three seats on the eight-member U.S. component of the Joint Commission.
A separate review of Embassy PSD operations, ordered by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, is being coordinated by Ambassador Patrick Kennedy and will include distinguished outside experts.
In addition, a Department of Defense-led review of the Management of DoD Contractors and Contractor Personnel accompanying U.S. Armed Forces in Contingency Operations Outside the United States has been announced by Defense Secretary Robert Gates.
All investigation and review results will be considered together after their completion.
The Embassy and MNF-I regret the loss of life related to the incident on September 16 and reiterate their commitment to conduct full and transparent investigations.
The Embassy and MNF-I are fully committed to cooperate with each other and with Iraqi authorities on finding a mutually acceptable way forward regarding U.S. Government-affiliated PSD operations in Iraq.
