Mottaki: US concerned about its performance in Iraq

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Aug 9, IRNA
Iran-US-Mottaki
Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said on Thursday that the United States' wrong policies in Iraq account for contradictions in words and actions.

The Americans are in a very tough situation and are very concerned and confused due to their wrong performance in the war-torn Iraq, he said.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of official ceremony to see off the Iraqi premier, he said there would no way out of existing situation in Iraq unless the US managed to change and correct its wrong policies.

Referring to kidnapping of five Iranian diplomats as among the US contradictory behavior, he said "In our negotiations with the Iraqi premier, the Iraqi officials once again condemn the heinous measure of the US and underlined that they would continue their efforts to release the Iranian diplomats."

During the visit of the Iraqi premier to Tehran, the two sides evaluated the second round of direct talks between Iran and the US, he said, adding that "In our opinion talks should support political structure of the Iraqi government to help restore security to the war-torn country."

To materialize this goal, the US should amend its wrong policies and fulfill its commitments regarding support for Maliki's government, he said.

Iraqi itself should take care of its own security, underlined Mottaki.

The two sides officials are determined to broaden political and economic ties, he said.
