2 Iraqi ABC Journalists Killed in Baghdad Ambush
18 May 2007
The U.S. television network ABC says two Iraqi journalists from its Baghdad bureau were ambushed and killed Friday.
The network says unknown gunmen in Baghdad attacked the vehicle carrying cameraman Alaa Uldeen Aziz and soundman Saif Laith Yousuf as they were returning home from work.
Separately, the U.S. military said coalition forces detained six people during a raid in the Iraqi capital early this morning. It said detainees are suspected of involvement in smuggling explosives from Iran.
U.S. military officials have long complained that elements in Iran are supplying armor-penetrating explosive devices to insurgent groups in Iraq. The United States also accuses Iran of aiding and training extremist groups in Iraq, a charge Tehran denies.
U.S. and Iranian officials are to meet May 28 to discuss Iraq's security and stability.
In other news, the U.S. military says Iraqi troops have detained 16 more suspects in the search for three U.S. soldiers believed captured by al-Qaida-linked militants last week.
Thousands of soldiers are searching for the missing soldiers. The U.S. military is offering a reward of $200,000 for information on their whereabouts.
The three U.S. soldiers have been missing since Saturday, when their unit was attacked south of Baghdad. Four other U.S. servicemen were killed in that attack, along with an Iraqi interpreter.
An al-Qaida-led militant group, "the Islamic State of Iraq" claimed responsibility for the attack, and has demanded that the United States call off its search, if the soldiers are to remain safe.
